Lectures
From the material at the heart of The Love Lives of the Artists, I have developed a two- to two-and-a-half-hour program that starts with a lecture about art, love and marriage generally, and then tells two of the artists’ stories before it unfolds in question and answer and conversation. This program is popular with students, who are essentially artists themselves: they are creating their lives, their careers, their ideas of happiness, ideas of justice and work. Art students, writers and literature students in particular have responded enthusiastically, but I present the material for a general audience, and students from numerous disciplines have engaged with the artists' lives.
After a 45-minute presentation of one or two of the stories, the conversations that follow cover a wide territory, ranging from art and creativity to madness and depression to marriage and modern love to academic biography and modern writing. Regardless of the audience, the deliberation with which the artists lived their lives, made their art, and conducted their relationships elicits a degree of seriousness and reflection from almost every group.
